A Year of Changes, Both Good and Bad

It's hard to believe I haven't updated my blog in over 7 months. I haven't even logged on to catch up with all of my blogger friends. Life has a funny way of getting in the way sometimes. But when my eyes finally opened and I logged on....WOW. So many things have changed for everyone, both good and bad. What a year!!

In the past several months, I have had things both good and bad happen in my life. Some things I have control over and some things I don't or I've just chosen not to control.

I thought I would list a few things I've experienced since February 2nd - my last post.

I have been in touch with several of my high school classmates that I haven't seen in 25 years. Some of which I now see weekly.
I have been in touch with several of my 4-H camp friends and we have dinner once a month. Some I talk to daily.
Our pet Hamster, Linny passed away.
Our pet dog, buttercup passed away.
I have a new best friend which I haven't had in years.
I met Nora Roberts in April at the Washing Romance Writers monthly meeting.

In April, I attended the Washington Romance Writers retreat in VA and met many published authors, one of which was a NYT Best Selling author whom I had the privileged of drinking a few glasses of Champagne with on the porch!
I won a door prize from Grand Central Publishing (formerly Warner Brothers). I get to submit a synopsis to the Executive Editor without having an agent.
I won a scholarship to attended the Romance Writers of America convention in Washington, DC in July and met too many authors to mention every name, but brought home over 100 autographed books.

Skeleton Key Rack

I came across this really neat vintage store - "Three Potato Four" - and they had some pretty cool things.

I found this Skeleton Key Rack and immediately wanted it!!

We love the elegant and romantic twist on this otherwise utilitarian item.
Made of iron, this skeleton key rack has a classical look that looks great in any
setting. Key rack measures 8.25"l x .25"w x 2.75"h. Can be mounted
using provided twine or with screws (not included).
This item is new, multiples in stock.

But where would I put it and what would I use it for? Sure you could use it for keys, but I wanted to be creative and put it in my office or new bathroom. Since the bathroom is not finished, I was thinking of the office.

The only thing that popped in my mind was for my necklaces. I only have a few that I wear all of the time, but I wasn't sure necklaces would look right..........hmmm.

Within the past year, I have been remodeling my bedroom and because it was so big, I made an office and a small bathroom just for ME!!.

The picture below is a project in my home office I am currently working on. One of my 2009 goals is to organize all of my pictures and display some around the house.

I used 4 12x12 sheets of cork board already cut from Staples and used liquid nail glue to secure them to the wall.

Then I bought small cork boards 6x6 and decorated them with scrapbook paper with colors to match my office walls - Eddie Bauer, paprika - then glued them on top of the larger cork boards. I also used an adhesive that came with the cork boards to hold my sticky notes on the board as well. In the picture the sticky notes look yellow, but they are orange.

One of the many things I've started to organize in January, is my digital photos. For years I have searched for a computer program to help me organize in a way I understood . . . . Simple, Easy and Fast!

"Memory Manager" by creative memories is the program I purchased to organize all of my photos. I can't believe I lived without this program for so many years!!

No More Sorting!!! This wonderful program pulled all of my pictures into one place and organized them by the date they were taken!

I now have all 19,000+ photos organized and it only took minutes, not hours.

Beauty Tip of the Day . . .

Ladies I have found the best facial scrub. Its affordable, easy and everything you need is most likely already in your pantry. (except maybe the rose petals)

Combined 4 tablespoons of refined brown sugar, a tablespoon of olive oil, and mashed-up petals from half of a fresh red or pink rose. Apply to damp skin and scrub gently using circular motions for one to two minutes. Rinse with warm water, pat skin dry, and apply your favorite moisturizer.

I tried this with regular brown sugar that I already had and extra virgin olive oil and no rose petals. I have to tell you this made my face feel wonderful!!! I even used it on my feet in the tub and on hands and elbows. Your skin will glow and no more ruff spots!!!

Starting 2009 On The Right Note!

I've decided that one of my new years resolutions would be to finally take care of myself!! Something I had started in 2008, but ended up putting off for other things.

1. Thanks to Santa, (wink, wink) I now have my GNC Women's Ultra Mega Active daily vitamins. And I have to admit, they do make me feel so much better.

2. I have also done my research on acai (ah-sigh-ee) berry. There are so many products online that are a scam. However, I did find a doctor who appeared on the Oprah show, Dr. Perricone, and this is what he said about Acai:

The Mannequin Is In The Building!

Here she is!! And I think she has been named. The last I heard her name is "Alicia."

She is about 6 feet tall. And my daughter would absolutely die if she knew I posted her picture on my blog .... shhhhhh.

This is the outfit I finally decided on and my 5 year old never questioned it. However, each day as I walk down the hallway toward my daughters room, I get a glance of Alicia and it takes me back. I think someone is standing in her room. LOL

Currently, Alicia is wearing my daughter school uniform. I will have to take a picture when she is not looking and post it. I believe her clothes change daily.

The Mannequin was a huge hit. Now I have to take my daughter to the fabric store and buy material and a pattern so Alicia will have her own clothes. She is a size and a half bigger than my daughter. If not, we will eventually have stretched clothes!

Santa Traditions

I have talked to many people over the years and it is interested to learn the process of how Santa works at their house - leaving one gift from Santa and the rest from the family - everything unwrapped - nothing wrapped.

At our house, the kids exchange something small from each other on Christmas Eve. My hubby and I always buy the kids new PJ's from their favorite store to wear on Christmas Eve. This was a tradition my parents started when I was a kid. This year they are getting Pj's from American Girl, Aeropostale and Abercrombie. When Santa arrives, he has many gifts wrapped in special paper and special bows. Each of my kids have one BIG item they ask Santa to bring. He leaves it unwrapped for them to see as soon as they arrive in the living room Christmas morning - hopefully after 6:00 a.m.

What are your traditions? Can't wait to read them all!!

Searching For The Mannequin . . . .

I did all my shopping online this year!! No stores, no rushing, very simple and probably saved a little money along the way. Just when I thought I'd found everything I needed, my 12 year old daughter comes to me with a new "REVISED" Christmas list. I read over the list thinking this is the same exact list as before - give or take a few small items. I reached the bottom of the list where she wrote Mannequin. My first thoughts - Hmmm interesting and unusual, but all she talks about it sewing and becoming a dress designer one day. No Big deal. I'll just head on over to potterybarn.com and order one of those beautiful dress forms. Piece of Cake!! ..."uh no mom, not a dress form, a mannequin." She starting explaining. "OMG it has to have a head and hair???" Where does one find a mannequin other than a department store, and what were the chances I'd find one sitting on a shelf for sale? A few glasses of wine and several hours later, I sat sifting through the $800 mannequins, when I finally found one for around $200. Job done!!

The NYC mannequin arrived a few days later. She has long blond hair, lots of make up, fake eye lashes and red fingernails. But OMG, she has NO CLOTHES!! How would I explain to my 5 year old why this 5'3'' naked mannequin stood in our livingroom next to the Christmas Tree? Not to mention the education she'd be giving her classmates. Yikes! Can you image the look on her teachers face when she tells her about the naked lady standing next to the Christmas tree Christmas morning? LOL. This week, I'm off to find something in a size 5 for this wonderful addition to our family!!!

Holiday Cooking - Recipe #2

Stuffed Sweet Potatoes with Pecan & Marshmallow

Ingredients

12 large sweet potatoes

3/4 cup (11/2 sticks) unsalted butter, at room temperature

3/4 cup light brown sugar

3/4 cup all-purpose flour

1/4 tsp. ground cinnamon

1/4 tsp. salt

1 cup toasted pecan pieces

1 cup mini marshmallows

Directions

Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F.

Wash the sweet potatoes, scrubbing them well to remove any dirt. With a fork, prick the sweet potatoes in a couple of spots and place them on a sheet pan. Bake for about 45 minutes, or until a knife inserted in the center goes in easily.

In a large bowl, mix the butter, brown sugar, and flour together until it's crumbly-looking. Add the cinnamon, salt, pecans, and marshmallows; fold the streusel topping together to combine.

Slice the sweet potatoes lengthwise down the center and push the ends towards the middle so it opens up. Stuff the sweet potatoes generously with the streusel topping and return to the oven. Bake for another 20 minutes, or until the topping is bubbly and brown.

Crescent Bacon-Cheese Tartlets

Ingredients
1 can (8 oz.) Pillsbury® refrigerated crescent dinner rolls or 1 can (8 oz.) Pillsbury® Crescent Recipe Creations™ refrigerated flaky dough sheet
1/3 cup shredded Swiss cheese
1/4 cup chopped cooked bacon
1 tablespoon chopped green onion (1 medium)
1 egg
3 tablespoons whipping cream

Directions
Heat oven to 375 degrees F. High Altitude (3500-6500 ft): No change.

If using crescent rolls: Unroll dough into 1 large rectangle on work surface. Press into 12x9-inch rectangle, firmly pressing perforations to seal.

If using dough sheet: Unroll dough on work surface. Press into 12x9-inch rectangle.

Cut dough into 12 squares. Gently press squares into 12 ungreased mini muffin cups, shaping edges to form rims 1/4 inch high. Spoon cheese evenly into dough-lined cups. Top each with bacon and onion. In small bowl, beat egg and whipping cream with wire whisk or fork until blended. Spoon slightly less than 1 tablespoon mixture into each cup.

Bake 15 to 20 minutes or until edges are golden brown and filling is set. Cool 5 minutes. Remove from muffin cups.

Twilight . . . . .

First, it was the books, then the clothing items and now the movie.

My twelve year old daughter hasn't stop talking about Twilight since she read the last page of the final book to the series.

I've heard how much she wants a Twilight jacket or shirt. "Everyone has them, mom." I'm trying so hard not to give in. I'm concentrating on my christmas shopping!!!!

This weekend, she followed me around the house. "Mom, you are going to let me see the movie on Nov 21st, right?"

Did I want to sit through a 2 hour movie about vampires? NO ..... But I didn't have the heart to tell her I wasn't interested in this type of move. Would I let her go to a PG-13 movie without me? NEVER ..... Did I really want to miss a moment to share some quality time with my twelve year old daughter and her friends? NO WAY ..... But, what was I going to do?

When the email arrived, I knew exactly what I had to do ..... I purchased three tickets, online, to the November 21st, 7:45 p.m. movie Twilight. One for my daughter, one for a friend of her choice and one for ME.

Was I the best mom ever? ABSOLUTELY .....

Have you changed your blogger template and noticed that the navigation bar at the top of your page dissapeared? Have you ever wondered HOW to get it back?

I found the solution and it is easy!!!

1) Log into blogger.

2) On your Dashboard, select Layout. This will take you to the Template tab. Click Edit HTML. Under the Edit Template section you will see you blog's HTML.
3) Remove the CSS definition in the top of the template code to show your navigation bar again.

We did manage to get to the pumpkin farm for apples and pumpkins before Halloween!!

However . . . . . we did cheat and picked from the group of pumpkins next to the store instead of going into the pumpkin patch!!

Lack of timing and planning on moms part, but my 5 year old didn't mind as long as she was able to pick out her own pumpkin!!

Light Bulb Moments

Have you ever searched for something but couldn't find what you wanted? Suddenly the light bulb goes off, the ideas coming pouring out so fast you can't keep up.

I've been searching for craft projects to teach my daycare children. My goal is to have a theme each month and focus on that theme the entire month. Yes, I know I have my work cut out for me!!

While browsing through my daughters monthly scholastic book order forms - you know the ones the teacher sends home in hopes you will buy something - I found the perfect project for the month of October and I decided to try it out with my nephew.

Needless to say, I did the work and he sat in the high chair - did I mention he is only 5 months old?

Pictures are worth a thousand words!

Definitely a scrapbook moment.

FYI - These books were only $1.00 each through Scholastic in the month of September. I can't wait to see what's offered this month!!

I've been remodeling my garage for the past two months in hopes that "Doodle Bug Early Learning Center" will be ready to open its doors on January 2nd.

My first little doodle bug - my nephew - arrived on my door step in September. I've been looking forward to taking care of him since his birth in May, but I've also been a little nervous too.

Would I be good at it?

Of course I would!! After all, I'm raising three children of my own.

Was I going to like being a daycare provider?

It's the best job I've ever had!!!!!

1. The Clarks® mule is the most comfortable shoes in the world!! And I just happen to have added a pair of these to my fall collection.
